Form 11 Future Job
Сhoosing a kind of career is a hard task that all school leavers have
to do. The profession a person chooses determines his future life in many ways.
It takes time to choose the career that matches your interests. If you choose
the wrong profession this might lead to miserable life. The properly
chosen career makes a person happy and successful for the rest of his life.
Generally
speaking it’s not easy for a school-leaver to decide on his future career.
There are some frivolous people who enter an institute thinking whether they
like the profession they had chosen or not. But occupation you want to devote
your life has to bring you satisfaction. So it should be something you can do
and you really want to.
As for me
I’ve made my choice long ago. I decided to be a ____________ . This job matches
my interests and abilities. I’m sure it will provide me with respect of others,
good pay and independence, job security, meeting other people, chances of
promotion, seeing the results of my work and so on.
As for me…
I am going to be a
lawyer. Lawyers don’t only punish people for different crimes but try to
prevent them. They help people to find the right road in life. The lawyers
protect the rights and interests of citizens and organizations.
I’d like to be a journalist.
They tell people the truth and provide them with news and true information. A
journalist must be interested in many subjects and must be a well-educated
person. They try to solve different problems with the help of mass media.
I have a dream to be a doctor. This is an interesting and noble profession. I want
to help people who face health problems. Doctors should be kind and attentive
to people. It’s one of the most demanded professions in the world.
I’d like to be a
teacher. Teaching can be called the greatest of the arts. It’s a great
responsibility to bring up children. Teachers should be well-educated and
well-informed. They help their pupils to understand the world we live in.
I have a dream to be an economist. I am good at mathematics. I have an aptitude for
working with people and have good social skills. I have good analytical
abilities and I am good at problem-solving.
As for me I think that…
To be a designer is
rather attractive. This profession can fit creative people who know how to make
things around them look nice.
For those young adults who choose the profession of a chemist, a mathematician or a physicistthe
determinant factor is not prestige but interest and inclination.
To be a biologist is very prestigious
and interesting today, because biologists are at the forefront of
cloning. They are on the threshold of great discoveries.
I think that to be a historian is also very important today. People think that
it is possible to live without looking back at the historical past. But it is a
mistaken view. We cannot live without history because it is around us. By
analyzing the past we can avoid the mistakes in the future. If people do not
use the experience of the past they will inevitably make mistake in the
present. Historians have always tried to understand past human lives and
societies. History helps to understand the global historical process.
Historians interpret the processes of the past to explain the processes of the
present and foresee the processes of the future.
One of the most fashionable and prestigious professions of
today is that of an IT operator.
Today our life is entirely connected with computers. With the help of computers
people can do a lot of wonderful things from controlling spaceship up to buying
books and participating in virtual conferences. New programs are needed all the
time to meet the increasing demands of our time. The roots of computer science
lie primarily in the related fields of electrical engineering and mathematics.
Electrical engineering physics and mathematics became the source of the
development of computers. I have to study hard to pass my tests successfully so
as to make my dream come true in future.
As for me I want to be a physician. Physicians help people
to be healthy and live a long life. They save the lives of their patients. This
profession requires well-educated people. Mistakes are impossible in this
profession. Physicians should be very patient and attentive with their
patients. In spite of all difficulties I think this profession is very
interesting and useful. I’ll do my best so as to make my dream come true in
future.
As for me I’ve got a wide range of interests. I like History,
I’m interested in Literature, and I read periodicals regularly. I know
something about economics and politics. I have read a lot of books about famous
politicians from different countries and I’ve decided to try to explore international relationships. It may
seem too ambitious but the thing is that the people of this profession should
be determined, brave and hard-working. They should be good orators, understand
other people and know foreign languages. But first of all they should love
their Motherland and be ready to devote much of their personal time for the
benefit of their country, their city or town. Now I’m going to study hard to
pass my tests successfully so as to make my dream come true in future.
I think that to be a sociologist or a psychologist is very
interesting and useful. Psychologists try to help people to cope with their
spiritual problems. Sociologists study the health of the society. I
decided to enter the department of sociology and qualify as a sociologist. And I think it is
very interesting. Sociologists are supposed to work with people, to render them
real help in difficult situations.
This year I’m
leaving school. I have already decided what career to choose. I would like to
be a psychologist. I want
to help people to solve their problems. I want to help them to understand their
inside world, to help them to be confident. I love working with people and
children. I think it’s a difficult job,
because one should love people, take care of them, support them. This profession
is rather new and hence very interesting. Psychologists work with people
from different layers of society.
I realize
that my dream can come true only if I work hard. In conclusion I should say
that our life in our hands. We should go and try.

Form 11
I: And here’s some advice to school students from a career guide.
We’re now going to talk with Jenny Ogden, who works in the Career Advice
Service. My first question to Jenny would be: How important is it to choose a
right career?
CG: Choosing a career is probably
one of the most difficult things in the world. You want to be doing something
that you love for the rest of your life. If you choose the wrong career, you
might probably end up in a dead end job which you hate and which results in a
miserable life.
I: What would you start with if you were to choose a job?
CG: The first step would be to create a
list of things that you like to do. For example, you can list down your hobbies
or interests that you have been doing or would like to know about doing. For
the list of hobbies or interests, you can put something like ‘I am good with
numbers’, ‘I am a nature lover’, ‘I am a technology enthusiast’, ‘I love to
sing’, ‘I enjoy cooking, cars,’ etc. You might also think back to your
childhood. Your early years might be the best place to start. Assess your abilities. What are your strengths? What are your
weaknesses? What kind of skills do you have? You can try to come up with
something that you are good at doing such as cooking or public speaking. If you
have trouble coming up with ideas, take some time to rest or walk in the park.
While relaxing yourself, you may think of something like, ‘I’m good at pet
sitting’ or ‘I make delicious cookies’. Write down these ideas onto a piece of
paper.
I: Well, what would the next step be?
CG: When you have the list of
ideas that you like to be doing, try to brainstorm several jobs that might be
related to food. For example, chefs, cooks, food specialists, kitchen helpers
or even chemists are all professions that are related to cooking and food. If
you wanted to be the president of your country as a child, you could look for
government jobs or social sector careers. The possibilities are endless. For
instance, if you ever dreamed of becoming a movie star and walking down the red
carpet, check out a career in media, the entertainment industry or public
relations.
I: How relevant is school experience in choosing a career?
CG: Extremely relevant! You can begin by looking at the courses you are taking in
high school. What are your best subjects? What kinds of extracurricular
activities do you participate in? What kinds of things did you learn from
part-time or summer jobs? There must be at least one class that stands
out above the rest. If you love history, art or archaeology, check out a museum
job. There are more options out there than you may think – even if you don’t
want to take tour groups around a museum, you could work on their marketing or
manage the museum’s finances. If history wasn’t your thing, maybe your
favourite course was in psychology. Or try thinking about jobs with some
elements of the psychology field. You may find that you are a people person or
enjoy helping others, so jobs in customer service, sales or teaching may be the
answer to your happiness. By going one step further and thinking about why you
have a passion for genetics or sociological theory, you will be able to find a
career that suits your interests.
I: So you’ve got a list of jobs. What do you do then?
CG: Now, assess these professions.
You can gather information such as job descriptions, salary, education
requirements, necessary experience, work related hazards, etc. Moreover, you
can interview others who are already in the professions and visit the library
for additional resources as well as searching the internet for relevant
information. Think what is important for you in a job: helping
society, working under pressure, group affiliation, stability, security,
status, working alone or with groups, having a positive impact on others, and
many others. Doing all these will
put you in a much better position for choosing your future careers.
I: If you were choosing a job, would you do a career assessment
test?
CG: You can try some of the free
career assessment tests. Career assessment test is one of the popular methods of
giving you an idea of what you are good at and what you like to do when it
comes to choosing a career. If you have the money, seek a careers coach or
guide for ideas. These professionals are experts in career assessment. They are
able to point you in the right careers direction after assessing key areas
which you are good at. You can also get free advice from parents, teachers,
friends or relatives. But remember that parents’ opinions are sometimes biased.
Most of the time, parents would say the financial aspect is very important when
it comes to choosing a career. As a result, the careers that they prefer might
not be the one that fit you the best. Keep in mind that simply choosing a
career because it pays well will not make you happy.
I: Are there any other options?
CG: You can apply for a summer job
in a company that specializes in the area of your interest. This job may later
become a temporary position which will give you added experience. And don’t
forget to do the reality check. Do you really want to
be a doctor, but don’t have enough skills in science? Do you have a strong
interest in the arts, but your family members want you to follow in your
father’s footsteps? It is important to face these problems and be realistic
about whether you can solve them.
I: So, choosing a career is a hard task that a lot of people have
difficulty in doing. It takes time to determine the career that matches your
interest. Simply choosing a career that pays the most won’t keep you happy.
Thank you, Jenny. I’m sure our listeners will follow your advice.
CG: You’re welcome. I wish I were
able to help everyone to choose a right career, but a lot depends upon you as
well. Listen to yourself and work hard to achieve your goals. Good luck!

Family 11
1. What does your immediate family mean to you?
Frankly speaking, my home is the best place in
the world for me and my family are the dearest people for me. I’m happy to have
a close - knit and friendly family. In my family I can speak freely about my problems,
share my joys and sorrows with my parents and with my sisters. I can say that
my family is an emotional centre of my life. My family members never ignore me;
I always get support and understanding from my family. I can’t live without my
family’s help and respect. They are always ready to give me a shoulder to cry on. I understand that my family members also need my
attention and support. So I, in my turn, love and respect my family and try to
obey my parents.
I have no
doubt that family is very important so its members should do their best
to keep it going.

Form 11
1. Let`s talk
about your family. Why is family important for you?
2. Are there any
things that you do with your parents together? Why (not)?
3. What will you
ask a British teenager about his\her family?
4. What can you
advise people who want to get on well with their parents?
5. They say that
parents and children have difficulties understanding each other because of the
generation gap. What do you think about this problem?
There is a wise saying "Blood is
thicker than water". From my point of view it means that your parents and
other relatives will stick by you in times of need more than your friends will.
That old saying has always been true for
me. There are some reasons to uphold my opinion. Our friends can be unstable
while our parents and relatives are the ones who really care for us. Parents
who have been living with me since the day I was born are the ones who
understand me most. They have already been through all my experience, so they
can give me some valuable advice. I myself do not want to confer with my best
friend about my very secrets for fear of her/him revealing it to everyone the
day we are not friends any more.
People may also be whining about their
problems to their close friends but in all probability what they receive is
often mild comments with several phrases like "Oh, I'm very sorry to hear
that" or "Try harder next time" or they would even pretend to
have deaf ears and ignore our whining completely. Few people really care for
others apart from themselves, but that is not the case with our parents. They
stand by us most of the time and give us good hints to help us resolve our
problems.
I remember talking to my mother about some
bad scores at school I got, and she said that it was not the end of the world
and she had also had many appalling results at school. She fostered me to go on
and never give up or feel ashamed about those bad scores because I surely
learned a lot from them. I think it was a very wise comment of hers
By and large, I think friends do not
understand us as much as our parents and relatives, so we must count on them
and never let them down.
I enjoy honest and open relationship in
our family. I'm happy to say that my home is the place where everybody
understands, respects and loves me. To my mind, this is the way things should
be in any family.
In happy, friendly, united families
parents are frankly honest with their children without moralizing and bossing
them around, and children in their turn leam how to get on with other people.
Members of such families treat one another with understanding and compassion.
They always share domestic chores. Children living in such families feel safe
at home. They trust their parents, share their secrets and problems, ask
parents for useful advice and rely on them. They don't run away from home as
they feel happy living there.
It's common knowledge that family is a
crucial instrument for the development of a child's personality. It's the
primary group in which a person forms. That's why it's vitally important for
every child to live in a friendly and happy family.
The family is very important as a unit in
our society. Nothing else but family can be an emotional centre of people's
lives and a transmitter of culture. Every mother feels great affection for her
children and tries to bring them up in a proper way. Understanding between all
members of the family and consideration for others are very important in
family relationships. Tenderness, warm-heartedness and respect must always be
present in the family to make it friendly. A lot of activities help family
members to be on friendly terms: discussing plans together, going on trips
together, visiting museums, theatres, exhibitions and exchanging opinions about
them, sharing the same joys and sorrows.
In my opinion, when a child is brought up
in a friendly family, he or she will become a loyal and responsible person with
a strong character and mind.
In conclusion I would like to add that the
bonds of family are always stronger than those between unrelated people. And I
am happy to say that my home is a place where even the tea kettle sings from
happiness. I can say that my parents trust me, give me freedom, rely on me and
respect me. These things, in my opinion, make family relations warm and
pleasant. So, I'm very proud of my family and love them with all my heart.
